WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN A YOUNG PERSONS LIFE?
California Heritage YouthBuild Academy, (CHYBA), is an area charter school working with students age 16 to 24. They are looking for adult mentors to pair with one student each. The pairings meet once a week for at least an hour. The school asks the adult mentors to commit to one year. The goal is to build a positive bond, help students to identify goals, and to encourage them to pursue those goals.
Nearly everybody has tools and connections that can aid a youth. No special skills are required. The primary tasks are:
SHOW UP, LISTEN, ENCOURAGE….repeat as often as you can.
Students certainly benefit, but many adult mentors say they get more out of the relationship than the student.

Special Project: THE BRIDGE
California Heritage YouthBuild Academy, or CHYBA, is a local charter school and affiliate of YouthBuild USA. They are launching a 24-session group mentoring program for men of color, called THE BRIDGE. Each session is scheduled for two hours.
CHYBA is looking for a qualified black man to help facilitate and lead the sessions---a small stipend is included. A Native American man is already committed and the school needs another man to share responsibility for delivering the program.
The goal is to identify feelings of alienation and marginalization, and to explore ways to hold on to one’s heritage while engaging with a complex world. Toward the end of the sessions, it is hoped that the participants will reach across the “bridge” they have learned to cross, and bring others across as well. Thus, current students become mentors for the next wave of students to cross the bridge.
